The following link to a thread by Sandy Morrissey, aka Helmar 4578, aka SwivelKnife, addresses your question.

Guys - Thanks for the input. How much "extra" should I include when I cut the pattern out of leather?

Leave more than you think you'll need. Its a lot easier to trim off the excess than put it back on! Use your grinder with around a 100 grit belt to make the ends even after you sew it. Then I like to use a round screw driver and run over the edges to slick them down.

Travis - That's an offer that I'll definitely take you up on. I like the idea of working under the tutelage of someone who's "been there, done that". I'm looking forward to the meeting too.

Mark,
May I make a suggestion/recommendation? Your profile indicated you are 'wannabe' knife maker and, apparently, a wannabe sheath maker also. Check out the videos available for rent at www.netflix.com. The sheath and knife videos are found in the Knifemaking section. Perhaps the best, outside of personal instruction, sheath video is the 2 dvd set by Chuck Burrows of Wild Rost Trading Company, www.wrtc.com. The videos may be rented for a week at a time for about $10 each per week, a little less expensive for the set together, although when I just checked, there is a waiting list for the set. If you want to purchase the 2 dvd set, I believe it is available from Chuck on his website or from Center Cross Instructional Videos, www.ccinstructionalvideos.com, the firm that produced the video set. |
