weekend hammer-in
Well I got all the old addresses I could off the old computer. I nkow I'm missing quite a few from the old list. If anyone here wants to be on the email list for the weekend meets and didn't get an email a few minutes ago...email me and I'll be sure an add you.
Here's what's up.... >> >> It's been a while since we've done one of these! The next one will be this coming Sunday, Feb 10th starting at noon here at my shop in Bryan, TX. I'll be doing a series of test peices of clay-coated, water-quenched blade sections to mimic a Japanese tanto. I get quite a few questions about this, so I figured it would make a good weekend topic. I have about a half dozen test sections that will get several different clay patterns, and then quenched, polished and etched. I'll also show how I mix and apply the clay, etc. If you have a plain carbon steel blade (10XX) or simple oil-quenching steel blade you're wanting to do a bit of hamon production, bring it on out. Shoot me an email if you have questions or need directions. Let me know if you plan on coming out as well. I'm fresh out of rattlesnake, but we can grill hot dogs or something. All of the wood I collected waaaay back has been curing for a couple years now. There's been some really interesting pieces of Mexican ironwood and mesquite-ish woods in it. If people are interested, we can saw some up for "party favors". If anyone has a good digital camera, I need some photos so I can put together a really informative article for the newsletter. Our camera seems to be doing odd things lately. I'm all out of blackpowder, so no cannonfire this weekend...but if someone happens to have some 2F blackpowder sitting around..... Hope to see lots of ya'll come out, it's been too long! Don We come up really well on Mapquest. 8229 Scasta Rd Bryan, TX 77808 |

Cool, so far looks to be about 5-6 people. If you have blades to try out clay-coat quenching, bring them on out. Aside from water, I have a couple different viscosity oils for oil quenching. Contrary to some, you can get pretty decent hamons with oil quenching steel, you just have to work a bit. Here in Bryan, I think we have a few different viscosity waters as well! I'll have 7 test pieces, with three zones on each, so we ought to get some decent results. I added a patio section to my shop, so there's room to hang out rain or shine. Although, I'll personally gaurantee mild weather with sunshine on Sunday.
Glad to hear from you Stan. I thought you had changed email. The only list I had was one of the first ones I did. I never could get the info from our old provider...but don't get me started on compuserve! |

I have to say Sir, that I am more than disappointed that there will be no firing of chickens out of the cannons. But, I'll show up any way.
Hey, quick question. For the blades you plan to clay treat, what grit do you recommend they be taken to before heat treat? Chris |

A patio section!?! Bryan, Texas is becoming positively cosmopolitan!!!
I'm gonna drop by College Station on the way and check on how my kid is spending my money. Chris, do I need to stop at the bank, or are we still "in progress"? __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |

I take mine down to 320, then scuff lightly a bit by hand in a small circular motion with some wet/dry 220. Anything between 600 and 220 seems to work. You want a bit of surface for the clay to adhere, but not deed enough scratches that you get stress risers and cracking along the grind marks...which W1 and W2 love to do!
I fired a rancid ham out of the 6"...but never a chicken! |

I think we were technically shooting AT the chickens. The only one to actually hit one of those 'free-range' chickens was Don's little boy (with a squirt gun).

Those blind free range chickens are crafty.

Don I just wanted to say hello. I am from Bryan. I know the area where you are at very well, in fact my oldest son lives not to far from you in Kurten. My family and I are in Georgia right now but are moving to Longview in a couple of weeks. I hope you decide to have more of these so I can come to a couple of them. Hope you and everyone have a great time and do not be to hard to those chickens.

Nice to meet you Wade. We have a Bryan address...but a Kurten phone number, right inbetween the two cities.
We call these the "monthly" meets, but it's more like every other month during Spring and Summer with a loooong Fall and wintwr break. PM me your email address and I'll add you to the bulk mail list so you know when the next ones are. We could always get your son hooked on knives too! |

Don, you ever get to try out that S30V I brought last time?
For that matter, does anyone need some steel to try out? I've got a pretty good assortment of carbon as well as stainless. Chris |
