My first sale!

Here are a couple pictures of my first knife sold to a customer.
It was shipped last week. It is a gift for her husband's birthday coming up.
Fortunately she was very pleased with everything.

I posted pictures of some of the knives I've made for myself, friends and relatives in an album in the photos area. The knife I made for my brother led to this sale.
Yes, I certainly hope more to come!

Actually my next project is going to be for a good friend of my son. The young man is a 9 year Army Veteran that ended his career when a large I-beam slid off a flatbed and hit him in the back over in Afghanistan. After several months rehabilitation he was given a medical discharge. He also did two tours in Iraq before that. He is now going back in school to learn a civilian trade, and taking care of his wife and daughter. Consequently he doesn't have money to spare, but he would dearly love to have a custom made knife. He won't take charity, so I'm trying to figure out how get one made as inexpensively as possible, but still with good quality.

I intend to donate my time to make it.
Anybody have any other suggestions?

Charge him $20 for the parts, tell him you had them around the shop?

Or tell him his service already paid for it, so it's not charity.

Wish I could, but the knife I just sold cost almost $200 in parts, the blade being the largest expense. He knows I don't keep that kind of inventory.

That's a great thing...see if you could incorporate something from his service into the handle? ...unit patch or earned medal? As far as payment goes ask him for something in barter....service design a website...??? Whatever his gifts are

Just some thoughts for you.....

Cool handle by the way and congrats on selling your first knife! ...Very Good Things!

Being a Navy Vietnam Veteran myself, I would like very much to do something nice for him.
The barter idea has some valid merit. My wife wants me to build her a garden shed, may be I could ask him to help, and make the knife in payment for the help. He might go for that!
The incorporation of something from his service is a great idea too. I know a web site that sells miniature size medals. Hmmm . . . . . . . .

Cool! Sounds like him helping w the shed is a good idea. Thank You for your service, and Welcome Home Sir.

I built the the daggers on my id pic above out of starrett 496 and used the brown micarta for scales. There is two separate pieces of 1\8" micarta on each side. The mark side includes an inlay of sheirff's uniform insignias for our motorcycle wings that we wore on our uniforms. Initially I wanted a blind hole inlayed into a single thick piece of micarta, but without a mill is was unadulterated to figure it out. So I drilled holes all the way through one piece and fit the wings with a dremel and file, then glued and pinned them together. (It was a lot of work) but its the little sentimental things like that make a big difference. I also file worked our unit numbers on the spine between the scales. (Filework is more difficult than it should be!!!! My hat is off to those who do it well! )

There are more detailed pictures in my photo album if you'd like to browse

Please keep us posted on what you decide idea to do!

Alex
