Rusty cable
Come across some 1"wire cable , I was thinking about using it for cable Damascus, but its badly rusted, I burned it out in my forge to clean it My question is Well the rust screw up the welding process? Thought I had better ask before going to all the trouble! Duke

I have never had good results with badly rusted cable, it has always seemed to trap oxide between the strands and inner core. If you only have mild surface rust (i.e. No pitting to the wires) your flux should clear it out. If the wires are pitted toss it out, it wont be worth your effort.

A I am giving to understand, the pattern the cable makes comes from the drawing out process while making the wire. It decarborizes around the outside. If it is badly rusted, that decarborization zone is gone, so would go your pattern.
I'd give it a try for one blade, it might just work out. Let us know. |

Rust can be removed chemically. I've seen another knifemaker take the cable apart and soak it in a hot solution of TSP (trisodium phosphate) to get rid of remaining grease and surface rust. He then put the pieces back together and did his forging.

I made a ring out of rusted saw blades that i layered and forge welded but in between the layers that were badly rusted i have a huge crack. Remember that i did nothing to remove the rust and it was really bad but all of the mild rust seemed to forge weld without an issue. I would say forge a little and see how it turns out.
