Ironwood burl drop point
Just finished this one up, i have been drying the desert ironwood burl since April 2012 and figured it was about time to try it out.
The steel is 1075 3/16" thick differentially heat treated, lightly etched to reveal the hamon (which i couldnt get to show up in the pics, cause im a crappy photographer) Blade length is just under 5" with an overall length of 9 3/4" The guard is 1075 and copper. Handle is ironwood burl i have been storing in a sawdust filled rubber-made tote for close to 3 years now. Good or bad let me know what ya think, i know there is always room for improvement. |

Nothing bad about that one. She's a beaut! I Like the stacked guard. I've been trying to locate some iron wood. That stuff looks real nice.
ETA. That wood block it sits on in the pic is killer. Is that cocabolo? Or koa? Last edited by ricky_arthur; 01-22-2015 at 12:36 AM. |

Thanks Ricky, and the wood is Koa. I bought 2 slabs of ironwood on eBay back in 2012. I planned on cutting and selling enough scales to justify spending that much cash on a piece of wood, so shoot me a pm if you want some.

To me the handle looks like Koa and not Desert Ironwood. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Koa is a tropical island/polynesian (Hawaiian) hardwood.
Desert Ironwood is a SW US leguminace closely related to mesquite. The samples I have do not have the same end grain cellular structures or wood grain characteristics. Is it possible the "Iron Wood" moniker is a local term and not technical? Same as a lot of locals call post oak "Iron Wood" here on the east coast. Would/could you clarify. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

The wood block in photo 2 is 5A Koa, the knife handle is Desert ironwood. I think it is how the pictures come through. Held in the hand you can see all the swirls and other trademarks of desert ironwood, that and i cut it off of a big slab of desert ironwood.
This isn't the slab i bought, but my slab was from the same burl |

Yeah ill get to the sheath eventually, that and etch my makers mark. because i dont have a dedicated work area for those things i get lazy and tend to not want to do them as it is a huge process to get everything out and set up. I just need to go buy a bigger house
