Smile Tell me something

Somebody tell me something I don't know. There are lots of things, but I've forgotten what they are.

Hey Don,

Well, I don't know about the others, but you know so much that you've probably forgotten more than we'll ever know.

One thing I did find out was this. I finally got a carbide bit, number 55 for the detent ball to rest in. Not the bit mind you but the hole it makes! Well I had a problem in that my hole was exactly in the middle of the bevel and the flat ricasso area. So when the ball slipped into place, it still had some movement in the blade allowing it to stay open too far.

I've already heat treated the blade and everything is finished except for this. I think the diameter of the 55 drilled hole is larger because one side has been ground downward where it is on the bevel. Does that make sense? So what do I do?

Here's what I've done so far. The knife is for my brother so it's going for material costs only. I filled up the hole with JB weld and made a smaller hole, built up the bevel side so it will be at an even height all the way around the hole. Will this work? The blade is ATS-34.

I don't have a welder to fill up the hole to start ove again.

Bill

Bill, I can't think of a fix for that. i assume you mean the hole is actually on the plunge shoulder? I doubt that anything you put there will resist wearing away. What about your other blades? Can you put the detent closer to the pivot?

A carbidizer would probably fill the low side of that detent hole. Some makers are using a carbidizer to make the face of linerlock lockbars hard. It applies little grains of carbide to the surface. Good way to salvage a lock or make it less sticky.

I hope you find a solution to the detent hole some way.
