Swiss dagger?
Saw the above knife in KI yesterday. The ad says it is a Swiss dagger. I did some searching but didn?t find anything on it that wasn?t on the above knife or a different knife. Any info on it? Jim __________________ I cook with a flair for the dramatic, and depraved indifference to calories |

Its an old design called a Baselard, been in use since 1300 or so, maybe longer. Some made it up to sword-sized. I've always had a liking for them...

Swiss baselard from late 1400's on up. Also known as a Boker swiss dagger and Holbein dagger in it's later form. More people recognize it as the Nazi dagger and don't realize those were just a modernized version of a centuries old design. The Nazi WWII helms are also a modern take on a German sallet helm of the 1500's.
Here's a nice original: http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Baselard I pretty sure I have some books with some museum pieces also if you're interested. |
