And which steel...

Been around for awhile but in helping a new maker who has asked to move away from D2, I was curious about which steel you think is the best to grind. Now please try to talk the old steels used if you can. If not tell me anyway...

Well, D2 wasn't any fun for me to grind. But, 1084, 1095, 440C, O1, S30V are the steels I used most often today and all of them seem to grind easily to me. Since I do all my grinding post HT that's a pretty fair indication that those steels aren't bad to grind...

I would vote 01, or even A-2, as they come spherodized annealed. You can carve slivers from then with a knife.
