Second Knife
I am close to completing my second knife. I just need to put the final edge on it and make a sheath. Like the first, it is a Dozier style skinner. The handle is Hawaiian Kauila.

That's a beauty of a knife, especially for a second. Nice lines, grind looks good, handle is unique. Very nice. Congratulations. I'm curious to see how your sheath turns out. Keep us posted.

Thank you for the comments.
The wood is kauila. My brother-in-law gave me a piece he had been holding on to for several years. To my eye it's a scrubby looking tree, but the wood is beautiful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alphitonia_ponderosa Lee |

Nice job. The wood really catches your eye.
I am STILL working on my first. What do you do or how did you control the lines so well at the ricasso? That is the part that I have been struggling with. I am to the point where I may have to break out the files and clean it up. |

dwc34205,
I am hesitant to answer your question since I am barely a novice, but since no one else has chimed in I'll share what I do. I decide where I want the line to be and put masking tape on the edge of it, going over the spine. I make sure both sides match, put some more tape on to protect the blade, then put on a guide I made from scrap steel. Mine is pretty simple, just a couple of rectangular scraps matched up, with holes drilled in the ends and bolts going through the holes. You can buy much nicer guides. While I think I may be holding the blade in a manner that will produce a straight line, I seem to have a tendency to come on to the wheel at an angle. The guide keeps my lines straight and once it is in contact with the edge of the wheel, I start grinding toward the tip. Those of you reading this who have more experience, please correct me if I am doing this wrong. Lee |

Lee, if it came out right, you did it right. It might not be the way I might do something or one of the Master Bladesmiths on these boards would do something but you problem solved and got it right. What you did could help someone else out even if you've only completed one knife, maybe not even one knife. The thing is that you could do something that someone else was having problems with and you're experience and advice is as valuable as anyone else's.
