I agree with Ray..... a 20 lpi (lines per inch) checkering file is the way to go.
Based on your post, I suspect your thought was to do it with a needle file and cut multiple, individual cuts/grooves..... That's very difficult to do, and even more difficult to do well. The checkering files aren't cheap (expect to pay around $50 for a good one) but it's the right tool for the job.
