Thanks Jim, Dave.

It took a bit longer than 20 minutes to sharpen it the first time! Fortunately one thing my old mentor taught me was patience when sharpening a knife! That, and good quality hones . . .

The bar stock I made the blades from started out at 0.156 inches thick, and I only remove enough material to make it flat, smooth and parallel using my 4x36 belt sander, so yes they are fairly thick. I then adjust the primary bevel angle to fit the width of the blade leaving a strong spine on them.

Thanks again everyone, I greatly appreciate all your help with this, I learned quite a lot!

Now I can continue on with the two knives for my brother-in-laws.
