I thought of that Sandy, but knowing how leather likes to stretch, and knowing that the friction fit is the only thing holding the rod in place, I decided for overkill. With the extra stitching line in place there's less to stretch.
On the sheaths which have the rod mounted on the front, the knife handle acts as a stop for the rod (in fact the knife has to be drawn in order to pull the rod).
