I blew Bill's photo up until it pixelated... and it seems that the "L" may be scratch-engraved rather than acid-etched. That would make good sense and could be done long after the blade was made and the knife handle installed. Any good trophy shop could do it. It would also be very easy for an artisan such as TL to do, contrary to the requirements of acid-etching. To confirm we would need a really high res picture and a magnifying glass, but scratch engraving would be my default guess.
