"Newspapers and the Truth"
I just finished my book,"The Earth is Weeping", and one thing that stuck in my mind was how newspapers manipulated the information about the Indians.Often, the Indian agent would short-change them on their rations and supplies, so they had no choice but to leave the reservation to hunt buffalo.The western newspapers would proclaim that "the Savages have jumped their boundaries and are killing settlers, burning ranches,etc.....then the Army would come in and it would start all over again.
Years ago, people believed that if you saw it in the paper, it had to be true.We believed they were under a moral obligation to print the truth, rather than perpetuate a lie....,kinda like the media
today....
