Trench art or something else?

Looking for help with this knife I picked up in an antique store. It has a cork with leather banding handle which looks homemade. The blade is about 4" with a slightly rounded tip. I can't tell if the blade has been cleaned recently or just had been in the sheath the whole time but no oxidation on the blade at all. Its also still very sharp. The sheath is leather and very hard and old with possibly some copper studs which are slightly green. So I'm wondering if it's some sort of navy homemade job or possibly a whaling knife. The cork handle leads me to believe it was used in an aquatic setting. I'm a knife novice so bare with me. Also..I have pictures but this form doesn't really make it easy to post pics. Not sure what they mean by thumbnail url.
