if you want the guard dark don't use stainless. carbon steel, or wrought iron. then bluing method of choice. ive had luck using cold blue. clean metal well, paper towel soaked and rub parts till dark black. let dry and sit for a few min. then wipe down with denatured alcohol. apply liberal coat of WD-40, and check on next day. wipe down with WD-40 again.

if you want the 440 guard to stay shiny, don't get it in the ferric. etch blade before adding guard, or mask the guard off with a bright colored nail polish. use tooth pick to paint around the seam for a nice clean line.
