On the next one, use a fresh belt on the handle because a fresh, sharp belt will grind cooler. Don't let the pins in the handle get too hot or they will scorch the wood which is why the rear pin has that dark halo around it ...

This is probably the sixth knife I've done scales on and I'm used to a far larger surface that can disperse a lot more heat. You have a very valid point. And I'll take the call on the name for it gracefully. Valid points. The handle was done on a drum sander. Forgot to mention that part. The drum sander is more familiar and gives me 3 different grits to swap through before sanding by hand for the last bit.
