This only works with flat ground blades but this is the way I do it:

Grind the bevels on the blade with my trusty 60 grit. Naturally, this is grinding across the blade.

Next I use 120 grit to grind lengthwise on the blade using my contact wheel. As Carl explained, be careful to remove all the previous grit scratches (which are much easier to see when you grind across them like this).

Now, back to the flat platen grinding across using a 220 grit belt. Get out all the 120 scratches.

Finally, 400 grit on the contact wheel grinding lengthwise again. Get out all the 220 scratches.

That's it, you should have a pretty fair finish by now. At this point, you can do a little hand sanding (lengthwise) with 400 grit or finer if you wish or you can use a ScotchBrite belt (lengthwise) to refine the finish a little more for a nice satin look ...
