I did see that but thought that if a seamed pipe had been broken open so that the blade could be forged it might give a result like the pictures. As I said though, that was only a guess and your idea is just as valid and maybe even more likely. Whichever may be the truth, I still think the tube handle is meant to be the handle and not a tang to be built upon. And I also agree that they are probably not worth giving away....
