Montejano, the wood seems to be dense enough that it could handle humid weather. I did apply a deep penetrating hardening oil, and there was not much oil pulled into the wood. I don't have any more of the wood, and won't be trying to order any. The wood just isn't exciting enough to me. It reminds me of rosewood.
Brett, the escutcheon is maybe a thousandth of an inch or less above the surface of the wood. After assembly I buffed all the way around it to smooth out the edges. Normally I'd have sanded everything down flush. This was just an experiment.
